Description

First let me start with the fact that I know there are far more knowledgeable and qualified collectors who will know more about this particular engine/components than I do!! I welcome any verifiable corrections and/or additions to this ad (I will post updates that qualify during the auction or sale). With that said, let the below text & detailed pictures (including sub-page details) tell the rest of the tale. This engine was built by Joe Gemsa AKA "Jiggler Joe", a well known sprint car racer and engine builder dating back many decades. (I have exchanged photos/e-mails with known historians) Some research quotes include: "I knew and raced sprint cars against Joe Gemsa in the early 1950's", I know that Joe built and rebuilt lots of four banger engines", "I don't think that I have seen this engine before", "It looks like a street version of one of his racing engines", "Seems to me Joe (Jiggler Joe) built mostly rocker arm engines but this one looks like a single overhead cam", "This engine is NICE!" and "While, it's rare early engine performance parts alone are worth a bunch individually, even better yet, it looks to be a very unique/rare complete assembled package!". Make sure you visit the sub-page of Vintage Magazine articles I have obtained with info about some of Joe Gemsa's Creations! Other items found on the net (Street Rodder - Four Thought) about Joe's Cylinder Head.. "This is the first of the four-port intake, four-port exhaust heads. The head was originally made in about 1934 by the Morales brothers for use at Legion Ascot. It was a single overhead cam in its original form, not a rocker arm. In later years, Joe Gemsa got the pattern from Morales and renamed it the Gemsa head. He converted it to a rocker arm operation, although he did build a few overhead cam versions too. This was a nicely designed head and ran very well." He had 1st became aware of this engine assembly several years ago @ a "Four Ever Four" Antique Nationals Event, Los Angeles County Raceway, both parties exchanged phone #'s and he was later able to acquire it for a future project, that never happened. The included build photo's (see sub-page) are of the actual rebuild, it's believed to have very few show miles and was operating correctly when removed. For several years it remained in his collection (until & as you see it now), protected, preserved, oiled and hand turned over regularly (shows good/strong/consistent compression resistance on every stroke but has not been run in years). This engine is complete from Bell Housing/Clutch to Drive Belts/Pumps, Oil Pan to Valve Cover, Induction to Ignition and Mounts to Exhaust!! Visible believed known items include, Rutherford Two Piece Dry Sump Oil System, Magneto Ignition, Joe Gemsa built Single Over Cam Aluminum Cylinder Head "Experimental no.64-1979" (also center stamped ? *Custom Built for Robert Franke*), Gemsa Side Covers, Dual Weber 45-DCOE Carbs with Manifold/Linkage and Plenty of hand polishing throughout!! In closing, this is truly a rare work of art, history and automotive craftsmanship! A very rare piece indeed, perfect for that Old School Rod, Trac T, Vintage Sprint Car or ????? Thank You!!!! SPUDMAN Known Items: This engine is believed to be a runner as told to the previous owner and the same info was passed on to myself. I am sure it will need some tinkering, possible carb work etc... I have also turned over the engine several revolutions with no binding except on the compression strokes. There is clean oil on the stick. This Collector Part is Sold As-Is Where Is as with all fine performance parts. Every attempt has been made to describe this item correctly. I will be happy to answer all questions from a serious bidder. Please feel free to contact Spudman and I will answer all your questions honestly. I have listed this item from my own personal collection. If I don't know the answer, I will do my best to get it! Finally, It should attach to a pallet easily for shipping @ the expense of the buyer (glad to assist with estimates for the winning buyer only, No weight idea) and/or better yet, pick-up in person!
