So you want the look with out the cost? You say I want one where the hard $tuff was done with a little room to tinker? One that you can play with today while you work on the things that need tinkering? You want it to be a convertible with a Muscle Car feel? One a little different from the herd? A special car that exemplifies the Era of Trans Am Racing? Read on and you will see that this convertible will give you that feel for a fraction of a real one and well worth it as a late 60's convert! Pull yer boot straps up and sit a spell? "A Bit of History on the Trans Am" The Trans Am was born out of the Special Projects Group at Pontiac Motor Division, ran under the leadership of then manager John DeLorean, in 1969. The GTO Judge, a name picked personally by DeLorean, also had its debut in 1969. Coincidently, or not, the Trans Am came out with similar options to the Judge including a rear wing, Ram Air engine, and Rallye wheels. In February of 1969 John DeLorean was promoted to General Manager at Chevrolet. Did You Know? The name “Trans Am” was purchased from the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) at a cost of $1 for every car produced. There were a total of 2,343,450 Trans Am’s produced between 1969 and 1992. Not bad for a Name? In 1969 the base Trans Am option consisted of a 400 Ram Air engine ($509), required power front disk brakes ($64), variable ratio power steering ($105), 3.55:1 limited slip Safe-T-Track rear ($63), three-speed manual transmission, and heavy-duty suspension with front and rear sway bars. Visually, the Trans Am option package included functional front fender air extractors, dual hood to rear deck stripes, one year only twin hood scoops, a blacked-out grill, and a rear deck spoiler for an additional cost of $421. In the interior, the Trans Am had a three-spoke wood-grain steering wheel with a standard Firebird optioned interior. Other Trans Am options included a 400 Ram Air IV engine ($558) and a four-speed manual transmission ($195). Trans Am decals were located on the front fenders and rear spoiler. A total of 697 Trans Ams were built in 1969 – 55 with the 400 Ram Air IV engine, 634 with the 400 Ram Air HO engine. The Ram Air IV engine could produce well over 400hp in stock form but was rated at 345hp for insurance reasons. There were only 8 convertibles built in 1969, 4 with a manual transmission and 4 with an automatic. The Trans Am convertible was produced in only one color in 1969, Cameo White with Blue stripes. "Now on to this Affordable Version!" The owner of this Real 1969 Pontiac Firebird Convertible has taken the time-n-$ needed to get her to this level, enjoyed her a bit on the Hot August Nights Cruise In Reno last year and does not have time complete Cosmetic's and a few Detail's before a career relocation. You win big! Prior to the restoration this car was a clone for more than 25 years and most of the TA body parts may be authentic with the exception of a "Glasstek" hood! GREAT Factory Trans Am Look! Starting as a good driver with solid floor pans, the mission began! Both rear Qtr panel's had common rust at the wheel lips and to do it right both Qtr panels were professionally replaced without silly patches. The body was treated to a coat of correct Cameo White, Blue stripes and Phoenix Graphics! Base-Coat Clear-Coat and looking good! New convertible top fabric was installed along with reworking the Power Top Hydraulics! Finally a new windshield was installed! To tighten up the feel, a pair of Global West uni-body frame connectors were added along with solid body to sub frame mounts! Suspension wise, new poly graphite lower ball joints and fresh brakes! Yes it has POWER DISC Brakes and POWER STEERING! Under the hood and controlling the power resides a 455 Cubic V8 rebuilt by B.R.E. of Memphis Tennessee hooked up to a Turbo 400 Transmission by TCI that drive's the Power to the 3.83:1 Ratio 12 Bolt POSI with new axles! All fed by a Holley 4bbl Carb resting on an Edelbrock Aluminum Intake! Passing the gas is big tube headers hooked up to a Dual Fed-Dual Dump Flowmaster Muffler! Running, driving and runs as Kool as a Cucumber! On the inside you will find the interior pretty much stock and un-restored, with the exception of, New carpet has been installed! By looking at the condition, you get a good idea how this car was treated to begin with, Aged but NOT trashed. In closing, A Great LOOKER that you can enjoy while you work the minor details and $ave! SEE Known items below and Sub-Pages if Pictures for details on items needing attention and/or completed! PRICED TO SELL!! A Good Value!! Bid or Buy Now! Or as I always say: Ya Snooze Ya Lose!! GOOD LUCK!!!! SPUDMAN Known Items (READ!): BODY/TRIM/INTERIOR: A Professional 2 year young body and paint finish of good quality. Looks Great! A Great Survivor with good solid floor pans and NO Signs of any excess rust with the exception of a minor spot in the trunk and one tiny spot in the forward section of the RR wheel well (see sub-page pictures). Again VERY Minor but there. Both rear qtr panels appear to have been installed correctly! The Chrome on the grill is original and in fair condition. The top/door weather-strips and misc. other's need replaced and NEW ones are included! Windshield NEW! The new door sill plates were not in when photographed and will be installed prior to shipping. The driver window could use minor adjustment. The power Top worked great when tested but the owner states a switch or wire occasionally acts up. Seating, Console, Dash and Door panels are original with expected wear, very usable but a fresh interior would wake this one up with New carpet already in Place! UNDER HOOD & OPERATION: The 455 V8 and TCI Turbo 400 Automatic is known to be low miles with actual mileage and age unknown. Runs, Drives and Handles Great! The wiper motor works but the arms that wipe the glass are not installed. This is an original A/C Equipped car! The A/C Heater plenum box was cracked on engine installation and will need to be replaced with a new housing or just converted to a heater only housing (which is what I would do). Some hoses and components are in place with NO Compressor and other components still missing. So if you want A/C, plan on spending some time putting that together. FINALLY a GOOD DETAIL would wake it up nice! Mostly what is needed is cosmetic depending on your level. There is no way I can tell you what your level is and I have caught the most obvious items within the photos of the sub-pages. A Good Top Down Driver just the way it is! The owner knows he must sacrifice $ for the minor incomplete items. So You win! Sweat equity works on the easy stuff! The BIG $$$$ is done! The rest is up to you! Not New and Not Perfect but Real Fun, Tight and Fast!
