Listing Description
It's not to often that an automobile of this rarity comes along, let alone one that has had the same owner for more than 30+ years! We are also acutely aware that there are many available enthusiast sources for heritage, history, registries and club activities. As with any vehicle, it is always our policy to fully inspect in person, document, interview the owner, research and to provide the most comprehensive information available based on the information we are able to obtain, Couple that with crystal clear photos (in this case 5-full web-pages) and there is no question this is a very real 1968 Shelby GT-500KR Convertible! Black on Black, Beautiful and Presentable? Yes! Drivable? Very Much So! 100% Correct/Perfect? No! With that said, let's get on with this wonderful and very rare piece of history...
Currently private party owned, titled, registered in the State of Minnesota where the vehicle was also sold new @ Minar Ford of Minneapolis (see Marti Report 1st pix documents sub-page). Scheduled build date May 7, 1968, actual build date May 14,1968. From that report you will notice that it is 1 of 518 Ordered as a GT-500KR, 1 of 251 with this Engine/Trans Combo, 1 of 79 in this Color and 1 of 73 in this Paint/Trim Combo. The current owner has not and never has been part of a Shelby Club and to the best of his knowledge the exact whereabouts of this particular production sample have not been known until this listing. Now, known history?...
Purchased by the current adult owner over 30+ years ago when the vehicle was about 10 years young, at that time the actual miles were in the low/mid 60,000 range, the current miles (at time of inspection) are 67,768 ACTUAL. Over the years, it has been operated limited miles. Most of which time, the vehicle has been kept protected indoors not operated during harsh weather. Over the years and most of it during recent years, it has received, new professional paint refinish, interior seating surfaces, new convertible top and original power-train overhaul (see documents sub-page). His intent was not to reach concourse level show status but to preserve a rare, great looking and quality driver! Done... not yet.
According to the owner and based on the basic visible decoding we have done, we have every reason to believe the major and original power-train components are in place. Intake C80E-9425C (date 8-E-9 May 9 1968) and Cylinders Head Exterior Casting = C 8 0 E. The owner is certain that the engine/trans in the vehicle are the same items that came new, he had a professional shop completely disassemble/rebuild those components in 2004 with less than 300 miles (see documents sub-page). The differential has never been removed from the vehicle and/or restored, no issues. The engine compartment could use further detail issues (visible missing: original under hood Shelby apron tag (original door Jamb Tag is in place) air filter snorkel, fan shroud, washer bottle, wiring, smog pump disconnected, after market Air-Conditioning removed/included) Some minor/common cold start exhaust manifold to head noise was noted and cleared up when warm but otherwise mechanically sound.
The exterior body is wonderfully straight and has been professionally re-finished 2 years ago (average quality with minimal flaws pointed out on detail pages). All panels are original with the exception of a known RF fender replacement for damage upon initial ownership, along with that same repair, the hood and nose cone only needed minor repair, not replacement. No excess exterior rust was noted prior to the current and only complete re-finish. The rockers, floor and trunk panels are 100% original and of driver quality with no known rust other than the minor R/L spots (forward outboard near rockers) clearly visible in the undercarriage sub-page photos. Missing noted cosmetic items include Factory Hood Pins and Headlight Trim Rings. Interior new seating surfaces, carpet and as pictured, noted items include aftermarket Air Conditioning equipped with Compressor hoses removed (brackets/compressor included) and Tilt function is operable but the Tilt-Away Function has been disabled and actuator removed but included. OK?..
In closing, this vehicle is a solid survivor of rare heritage with known Adult ownership history. One that anyone should be proud to own. Represented honestly, we believe market priced accordingly.
