Description
So why would anyone want a replica of a Porsche Speedster????..........
Several reasons…
1. Money. An authentic 1957 Speedster, that looked as nice as this one, would cost you about four times as much money.
2. Money. You’d be afraid to drive the real one because every mile you put on it you’d be reducing the value significantly.
3. Money. You’d be afraid to drive the real one because you’d be afraid of irreparable damage.
4. Slow. A real one has a 1500cc engine with just 60 horsepower, while this one has a 2300cc engine and 179 horsepower.
5. Flexible. A real one has a torsionally flimsy frame, while this one has a solid tube frame.
6. Safety. A real one has no seat belts, while this one has a 3-point safety belt system for driver and passenger.
7. Safety. A real one has slow stopping drum brakes, while this one has four-wheel disc brakes.
Aren’t replica Speedsters built on an old, used Volkswagen Bug frame? Most are, but this one isn’t. Beck Speedsters are built on a special fabricated tube frame chassis. If you use the jacking points, under the doors, to jack up a Beck Speedster you can open and close the doors without damage to the car. Not so with Speedster replicas made from used VW frames. Open a door on one of those while the car is jacked up and the frame will bend. You probably won’t be able to close those doors anymore. Plus, if you look at a Speedster made on a VW frame you will see that the front wheels don’t quite line up within the front wheel well openings. On a Beck the wheels will be dead center in the middle of the wheel well openings.
Okay, so why buy this particular Speedster?
Carrera. This particular Speedster is a one-of-a-kind Speedster. This car is designed around the rare Speedster Carrera which was a little different from the other Speedsters of the era. The Carreras had a much more powerful engine. They were twin-cam engines putting out around 100hp compared to the standard 60hp engine. They didn’t have the rocker panel rub strips, and didn’t come with the side spears. The badging said “Carrera” instead of “Speedster”, and the engine cover had louvers for additional cooling. The Carreras came with Weber carburetors. They were faster and they cost more. Carreras typically had a high performance single outlet exhaust system, like the one on this car. Today, an authentic Carrera would most likely cost upwards of a quarter of a million dollars.
Engine. This car has a Series IV engine that began life in a Porsche 914. It’s been bored and stroked to produce 2300cc displacement, and has correct Weber carburetors. The engine dynamometer shows it producing 179 hp and 170 lb/ft of torque. There’s probably not another Speedster around putting out this kind of power. The engine was completely rebuilt with all forged parts rather than the standard cast pieces, then all the parts were cryogenically treated. The engine has been completely balanced and blueprinted (specs for all this come with the car). The build-up of this engine cost over $12,000. A very special DTM cooling system was fitted to this car, and it runs at a cool 325 degrees head temperature in the winter as well as in the summer.
Paint. The paint color on this car is practically identical to the factory’s Pasha red back in 1957. No one seems to have the exact color code for Pasha red today, but this car is painted in BMW Merlot, which is extremely close to photos of Pasha red.
Leather and Wool. The interior is all leather. The dash, the doors, and the seats are genuine leather. The top, the tonneau cover, and the side curtains are all made of German Hartz canvas. The floor mats and front trunk mats are German wool.
VDO Instruments. The instruments are genuine, period correct, VDO gauges. Even the clock, and outside temperature gauges are genuine VDO, and exactly match all the others.
Nardi Steering Wheel. The steering wheel is a genuine, signed, Nardi wheel that cost over $500. As a side note, the shift knob is an exclusive part that cost over $300.
Gasoline Heater. When it was cold outside Porsches were notorious for blowing slightly warm air out of their heaters when you really wanted hot air! There was an answer, though, which solved that problem. But it was expensive. This car has that answer; a genuine German made gasoline heater that blows HOT air!
Air Conditioning. Probably the most unusual option on this car is the air conditioning. It works, and it provides comfort on those extremely hot days. Those are the days when you want the top up so as to keep the sun from beating down on you. There probably aren’t more than a dozen or so Speedsters in the world with air conditioning. But, this is one of them.
Sound System. This car has a real, high powered, sound system. Kenwood receiver, ADC amplifier. Great sound, for when you’re parked.
Driving Lights. The French-made Marchal driving lights you see on this car are expensive, and hard to find. They put out that classic yellow glow that made them so distinctive back in the fifties.
Exclusive. You can find this car all over the web. It’s been photographed, ad museum. The wheels have hub caps that when removed reveal a totally different look. The photos shown at various website's show this car without the hub caps, which makes the car look racier. Your choice. Caps on, or caps off.
In closing, if you’re looking for just a run-of-the-mill Speedster replica this probably isn’t the car for you. You can buy one of the VW-based kit cars for $15,000 to $22,000. However, if you want the absolute best 356 series Speedster, without spending six-figures for an authentic car, you can’t do better than this car. It’s beautiful, safe, quick, and stops traffic! People gather around this car -- and just grin. Pull the Trigger and you will NOT be disappointed!! PENDING!! EASY FINANCING GOOD LUCK!!!!
